Diet for ADHD

By following a diet for ADHD, some behavioral and emotional issues emerging from this disorder may be regulated and possibly eliminated. Research has shown that many individuals afflicted with ADHD frequently exhibit non-psychological symptoms such as ear problems or other chronic infections often initiated by food allergies.

It is recommended that these foods be eliminated as part of a more natural diet for ADHD, at least for two or three weeks.   • Essential Fatty Acids-important for proper brain functioning and found mostly in fish
  • Zinc-which plays a role in stabilizing neurotransmitters influencing the severity of ADHD
  • Potassium-which assists in releasing vasopressin, a hormone enhancing memory and attention
  • Protein-which produces amino acid, a major component of cognitive functioning

Instead of prescription ADHD drugs such as Ritalin and Adderall, an alternative treatment for ADHD symptoms being reported to be effective is herbal supplements. Some of these include ginkgo, melatonin, St. John's Wort, and ginseng. Herbal supplements do not have to go through the extensive testing and proving process required from prescriptions drugs. Nevertheless, many of these herbs have proven useful for many people in alleviating symptoms of various disorders and diseases indlucing ADHD symptoms. The exact chemistry behind this is not known yet, so do your own research if you intend to put all your hope into alternative treatments.

Physical Activity and ADHD Diet

Besides following a natural type of diet for ADHD, another drug free treatment for ADHD is choosing a healthy lifestyle. An ADHD-alleviating diet combined with exercise is known to be highly beneficial to everyone and ADHD sufferers are no exception. Vigorous physical activity increases dopamine and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters which makes ADHD sufferers feel less anxious and impulsive. In addition, using the ADHD diet mentioned above with a light regimen of yoga exercise has recently been determined to correlate with reducing ADHD symptoms.

By following a healthy diet of natural, non-allergenic foods and special vitamin supplements, an individual with ADHD may find themselves experiencing reduced or total absence of ADHD symptoms that once interfered with achieving their goals for a happy and productive life.

Dr. Benjamin Feingold originally correlated ADHD and food allergies, eventually conceiving of a special ADHD diet that contained no artificial coloring and no salicylates. It proved to be successful in 30% to 50% of his own ADHD patients.

Several types of foods and additives are suspected to be influencing changes in behavior and mood in individuals with ADHD and food allergies. These include:

  • Yellow, green and red artificial colorings.
  • Chemical additives such as BHT or BHA.
  • Chocolate
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Wheat
  • Foods containing salicylates, a chemical found in aspirin but also in vegetables and fruits, such as grapes, oranges, tomatoes and all berries.
